Color Climax review

Reasonable people can argue about when the best era for porn was or is, but I suspect most people who collect and view porn as a hobby are aware that there are certain important milestones and studios along the way.

Up for review today is one of those studios: Color Climax from Denmark. Two brothers started Color Climax in 1967, and they quickly made a name for themselves throughout Europe and into North America with their boundary-pushing magazines, and later, their boundary-pushing 8 mm films and eventually VHS tapes. Prior to reviewing the Color Climax channel at Adult Prime, my only exposure to their movies was seeing ads for them at the back of American adult magazines in the 1980s.

I suspect that most people who collect porn and know a bit about its history, would recognize Color Climax as being one of the important milestones that got us to where we are today. Not all of it was good though. Pornography laws were very lax in Denmark in the 70s. It is important to note that the Color Climax website only has content that is legal and acceptable today.

Before I dive into the details of the ColorClimax channel at Adult Prime, the reader should note that I’m grading video quality on a curve. By modern standards, the videos available here are poor quality, but to measure them by modern standards would be a mistake. The videos available to us on this channel either started life as an 8 mm film or as a VHS tape. Digitizing either of those will not bring it up to modern standards. I’ve scored the videos much higher than I would had they been shot in the past few years. I think this reflects the value of saving historical porn like this. To put it more bluntly, when it comes to ColorClimax’s videos, the choice is simply to have them available as they are or not available at all. If that’s the choice, then I’ll take availability every time.

Another thing to note is that the Color Climax website only offers videos. While Color Climax and its sister studio, Rodox, both offered magazines, Adult Prime has divided the videos into the Color Climax channel and the photos into the Rodox.com channel. 8 mm films were short, usually between five and 15 minutes long, so the action often started quickly and was intense right up until the obligatory money shot. If you’re looking to find a sexy or sensual plot, Color Climax won’t be for you. But if you like historical porn, where couples and groups have hot sex, you come to the right place.

Color Climax did build some plots into some of their videos, but much of it will be lost on most of us since I didn’t encounter any videos where the actors spoke English. To my ear, most of the actors were speaking German. I’m confident that this won’t make a difference to anyone, but 8mm film was video only so the dialogue is dubbed over later.

While some the scenes available at Color Climax have a rudimentary plot, there are definitely many sexy fantasies played out, such as doctor-patient, teacher-student, boss-secretary, and waiter-hotel guest sex.
There is some variation in the number of models used and the locations. Traditional B/G scenes are the most frequent, but there are some threesomes and group scenes available as well. Some scenes are shot indoors, and some scenes are shot outdoors. There is enough variation to keep things interesting.

While I wouldn’t say that the ColorClimax channel will appeal particularly to subscribers who enjoy transgender porn, I will note that there are a handful of transgender scenes available here. While there aren’t enough transgender scenes here for me to include it as a tag, I primarily mention it because Color Climax pushed many boundaries, including shooting the occasional transgender scene, which was ground-breaking in the early 1970s.

I made a similar comment in my Rodox.com review that the videos offered here at Color Climax reflect the time in which they were shot. The videos all have a 1970s, and in a few cases, 1980s, vibe to them with the wardrobe and hairstyles reflecting what was popular back then. One other thing to note is that it was almost unheard of for women to trim or shave their pubic hair at this time, so subscribers who enjoy seeing natural pubic hair will find a lot to like here.

The Color Climax channel has 217 videos available for either streaming or downloads. For each video, the resolution and bitrate for the downloads and streaming are the same. There is only one resolution available for each video, though there is a range of resolutions throughout the channel.

As I noted above, since most videos here are taken from 8 mm films, they tend to be quite short by modern standards – between five minutes and 15 minutes long. There are several longer compilations that stretch to almost 1 hour as well.

In addition to the 217 videos available, the channel also has 80 “clips” and 15 “snips.” These are shorter segments taken from the 217 videos. While I didn’t do a deep dive into these clips and snips, I don’t think they add anything new to the channel.

The first video uploaded to the channel was in October 2019 and the channel added new videos regularly up until they stopped in September 2022. I understand that some potential subscribers will be disappointed to learn that the channel is no longer “updating”, but given that the most recent of these scenes could date back more than 40 years, and that new ones aren’t being made, I think that having access to the 217 videos here is a positive attribute.

It’s important for any prospective subscriber to recognize that the Color Climax channel is part of a large network of European porn, Adult Prime. It gives subscribers full access to about 90 original channels, many of which are taken from stand-alone websites, and over 29,000 videos and over 28,000 photo sets. Most of these channels are updating regularly, the network adds multiple new videos every single day. If a prospective subscriber is joining to get access to Color Climax and its huge library of historical porn, he or she will also likely be happy having access to such an enormous library covering many different themes.

The Adult Prime network is logically laid out. It’s easy to find channels, studios, videos, and photo sets that interest you. Within the individual channels, such as Color Climax, that same logic applies. Within the channel, all a subscriber needs to do is roll their mouse over any thumbnail to get basic scene information. Clicking on that thumbnail will bring the user to a page where the video can be downloaded or streamed. The network works very well on mobile devices too.

Color Climax will appear to a small segment of the porn collectors, but those will love it. Apart from its historical significance, it’s also some hot porn.
