VR Porn FAQ

This page is a tutorial and Q&A about VR porn for newbies.

What is VR porn?

VR Porn is the short name of virtual reality porn. It is porn that you can enjoy with a special headset. It provides a lifelike experience.

VR porn can put you in a room with a porn star. It feels as if you were having sex with them. Or in the case of voyeur-style videos, it's as if a person invited you to their bedroom to watch.

What kinds of VR porn are there?

  • VR porn videos
  • VR porn games, animations, experiences

At x3guide we focus mainly on paysites with VR porn videos. They are the most common way to enjoy virtual reality porn. These videos are similar to regular porn movies, they are 15-40 minute long, starring porn stars or amateurs.
They are recorded using special cameras though, so they can provide an immersive experience with VR headsets.

What happens in VR porn videos?

There are over 50 porn sites producing VR porn now, so many things are covered. Some things are quite common though. POV sex, as in sex recorded from your perspective. Stripteases, POV blowjobs, a girl riding you.
Girlfriend experience elements are popular, the girl looking into your eyes, teasing you, talking dirty to you, and kissing you. There are also voyeur-style VR videos, in which you are not a participant of the action, just a voyeur in the same room.

In addition to straight VR porn recorded from a male perspective (eg. Naughty America VR), there are also videos recorded from a female perspective for girls (eg. Virtual Real Passion), Transsexual VR sites (eg. Virtual Real Trans), Man-man VR sites (eg. Virtual Real Gay), and Fetish VR sites (eg. Kink VR).

What do I need to be able to watch VR porn videos?

You will need a VR headset (also known as HMD or head-mounted display). There are three types:

  1. Standalone headsets
All-in-one headsets that work on their own.
    • Oculus Go ($149): Standalone headset that includes everything.
    • Oculus Quest ($399): Standalone headset that includes everything. (More powerful than Oculus Go, higher resolution, and new controllers for gaming.)
  2. PC/Console headsets
They include the VR display, but you need to connect them to a powerful computer or gaming console.
    • Oculus Rift ($400): Very powerful gaming headset, needs a strong gaming PC.
    • Vive ($600): Very powerful gaming headset from HTC, needs a strong gaming PC.
    • Vive Cosmos ($700): Very powerful gaming headset from HTC, needs a strong gaming PC. The successor of Vive.
    • PS4 ($350): gaming headset for Playstation, requires a PS4 console.
  3. Phone VR headsets - VR cases for your smartphone
You put your phone in them, and they use your smartphone's display and processing power.
    • Gear VR ($130): headset from Samsung, needs a recent Samsung phone, such as Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6/S7/S8/S9/S10 series. There is no Gear VR for the S20 series.
    • Daydream View ($60): inexpensive standalone headset from Google. Mainly for the Pixel phones, but many others are supported too, check out the full list of supported devices.
    • Various headsets for Android / iPhone (from $10): You can use any decent smartphone, and find a headset for it on Amazon. Make sure it fits your phone's screen size. There are both cardboard and plastic ones, the plastic ones are better, and still not too expensive.

Which VR headset should I to choose?

Depends on your budget, and what else you'll use it for.

  • Only for VR porn: Oculus Go is probably the best choice. Good price, good video quality. Very comfortable without any cables or messing around with your phone. You can play some games with it too. If you have the money for the higher resolution, go for Oculus Quest.
  • Gamer without a strong PC: I recommend Oculus Quest, it's pretty good for gaming without a PC. It's quite powerful and comfy for porn too, and has a bit higher screen resolution than Oculus Go.
  • PC gamers: If you're a gamer with a powerful gaming PC, check out Oculus Rift and the Vive devices. They are the most powerful VR devices, and will provide the best picture quality for porn too.
  • PS4 gamers: Playstation VR could be a natural choice. It wasn't possible at first, but now you can play VR porn movies on it in 3D using the Littlstar app. Most sites have content that's optimized for PSVR now, but not all.
  • Low budget: If you have a compatible phone, a Samsung Gear VR or Daydream View headsets give a quite good experience. The only downside is always having to insert your phone in them. You can get used ones too at a good price. Make sure the model you're buying supports your phone.
If your phone isn't supported or want to spend less, you can also find simple plastic VR headsets on Amazon. Pay attention to the supported screen size and match it with your phone's screen size.
  • Free headset: Some porn sites like Virtual Real Porn also give away cardboard headsets for free if you subscribe.

What is the difference between 180° and 360° VR? Which is better?

  • 180° is a semicircle. They record everything that's going on in front of you. You can turn your head up, down, left, and right. However the video doesn't have what's going on behind your back.
  • 360° is a full circle. Everything is recorded in the room, including what's going on in the back of the room. When you're watching the movie, you can turn around totally, and look behind your back.

So which is better? Most VR porn fans prefer 180°. The reasons are:

  • 180° VR porn will have a better picture at the same resolution.
  • 180° VR porn are 3D—or at least most are.
3D is a big part of the experience, and right now you get the best quality 3D with 180°.
(Sharp looking 360° 3D movies may appear in the future, but the resolution of the devices needs to evolve first.)
  • Most people aren't interesting in looking behind their backs while watching porn. So why not use that extra resolution for extra quality, instead of wasting it on the back of the room?

One more note, 180° is more of a general guideline. Sitse don't neccessarily use exactly 180°, any number around that produces a similar experience.

Why are VR videos such high resolution?

The resolution specs of the VR devices may look super high, but it is needed. These resolutions will not be used for a normal-sized monitor, but a "room-size" virtual reality display in front of your eyes. Pixels are suddenly a lot bigger.

We also want the videos to be 3D. Then the resolution is effectively halved right away—because each of your eyes needs a separate version of the picture.

What do "SBS" and "OU" mean?

SBS stands for Side-By-Side, OU stands for Over-Under.

To have a 3D experience, each of your eyes need to see a slightly different picture (as they do in the real world).
To achieve this, the 3D video files are split in half. Either to a left side picture and a right side picture (SBS or Side-By-Side), or a top picture and a bottom picture (OA or Over-Under).

In some of the VR video players, you will need to set this display setting if it does not recognize a video automatically. (You will notice this, as you'll be seeing two pictures instead of one, or one picture, but disorted.) The most common technology for VR porn videos is 180° SBS 3D, followed by simple 360°.
